Results Pathway – Thinking

Thinking, we do it every day, hundreds of times and most of the time we are unaware that we are doing it. Our habits drive us in all areas of our life. The same patterns over and over again. The same results over and over again. Now this result may, for some things, i.e. brushing your teeth or driving to work using the same route for the last 20 years, be OK, but for other, probably not.

Just think of your business? Are you on auto pilot, just cruising along, letting your habits drive you? Getting the same results you have always got. Are those the results you want? Or are those the results you will settle for.
Thinking is the second step along the Results Pathway. The Results Pathway is this:
Our Thinking Strategies affect the Decisions we make. Our Decisions drive our Behaviour and finally our Behaviour determines our Results.
Our Thinking is often affected by the events of our past. The best way to illustrate this is via an example. If you think that cold calling is a waste of time, you therefore do not consider it when thinking of new ways to attract business, even though you may know it is potentially a good strategy. This thinking may have been reinforced each time an ‘unsuccessful’ cold call was made, to the point that you expected a rejection even before the phone was lifted. If each call was seen differently, i.e. an opportunity for learning, then each call will be seen as a positive step forward.
If each cold call was seen as a positive experience what effect would this have on the decisions you make re marketing, your behaviour or action in carrying out the task and consequently the result. Changing the meaning of the Event, changes the results for the future.
In your business what thinking patterns are you associating to previous experiences that may well be holding you back from being successful now? Most importantly what are you going to do to change that thinking pattern and therefore change the track you will take on the Results Pathway.
Once you are aware of the thinking patterns and events that have constructed your reactions, ask yourself these questions.
1. What could I have learnt from that event?
2. If I was back there again now, what would I do differently?
3. What will the future be like now having made those different choices?
The answers to these questions start the process of changing your thinking about a certain issue and therefore lead to different Decision, Behaviours and ultimately different Results. Notice I said ‘different, not ‘better’ results. As the results you produce change, check in with yourself to see if the new results are what you are looking for. If so, great. If not, keep on challenging your thinking until you are getting consistently better results.
